Beautiful work! Interesting comment about the mouth being so important. I worked with a few people for a year during covid and didn't see their nose or mouth during that time due to masking. We had an outdoor event to end the year and I hardly recognized one or two when seeing their whole face. I learned that our brains will "fill in" these missing features with what is our ideal (nose and mouth) for the person and I was surprised that their real face didn't meet up with the expectations my brain had filled in for them:) But it was wonderful to finally "meet them" full on!!
Thanks. About the mouth, it may derive from people looking at the mouth when others speak to them (that's where the words are coming from). Or maybe it's more fundamental than that... In any event, the whole world has been wrong forever in covering the eyes when they want to hide identities in photos. They should have been covering mouths as you discovered in your outdoor company events.
Dr. Reid, i love the varied content. i think perhaps, the other substackers' success is partly their copious regular posts. i haven't looked into the numbers but, some, like Cr. Paul Alexander send out a few 'subs' a day. people gravitate to regularity, methinks. dave
I was thinking the same thing, David. I wasn't putting out enough posts. I was doing only one per week. As of this weekend with the Batman comics paintings, the Primer on Climate Change, and the Reconstructive surgery case, I've been doing one per day since last Friday. Tomorrow will be my fourth day in a row. I plan to do one a day from now on.
I’m at an event and it is extremely loud, so I just went through the video with no audio...and I can say, even without hearing anything, that you are doing God’s work.
I appreciate this stuff...AND I understand that some people are overwhelmed by it.
I wish I could come work in your clinic. I cannot imagine how gratifying it must be...and heartbreaking. But I imagine the gratitude outweighs the heartbreak.
Please watch it later Sarah, with sound. You'll want to hear it too. Amazing story, geometry pearls, and that look she gave me. Did you see my previous reconstructive post from a few weeks ago? I got the same look from her too.
First of all...apologies for my misspelling of your name in the previous comment.
I just finished watching Part 2 with audio....and I am so glad that I did.
UNBELIEVABLE!!! I am stunned that it all happened in one year's time as well. Incredible work....truly. And what a brave woman...I cannot imagine how horrific the entire ordeal was for her. Thank God you were in her sphere...
I'll go back and watch Part 1 as well...and then of course Part 3.
Thank you so much, Sarah. I'm going to show everyone Part 1 after I finish a tutorial on Card Counting that I'm starting today and will require 10 posts, probably. Part 1 is very simple. It talks about my history drawing, shows a few of my first drawings, designs, and paintings and introduces a few concepts that anyone can apply over and over in any line of work. One interesting exercise I did was giving myself 10 seconds to look hard at a painting and then waiting 24 hours and trying to draw it from memory. Do it with a painting you've seen many times, like the Mona Lisa or some painting you really like. When I did it, I made lots of mistakes. You'd be surprised how fast your memory fades; mine, anyway. In the last 6 months, I took a go at painting more portraits and I've shown a sprinkling to my subscribers. One day soon, I'll do an "art post" and show them all. It's something new for me and I like doing it but it's very time consuming and I'm in the middle of revising my book which you will be in, by the way. You may know that Sasha Latypova puts a painting after her posts. She's quite good. Her Substack is called "Due Diligence and Art".
Part 3 is another reconstruction with a whole new set of problems. I forgot to mention when making it that making the radial artery as long as possible as an arterial conduit for the island graft was a key decision I made because I had to flip the graft around to fit it in her face and a shorter "tube" would have kinked and stopped flowing easier. You'll see what I mean when you watch it.
I started Part 1, but only got a few minutes in before my client arrived.
The memory exercise is so interesting...
I saw someone mentioned the mouth in regard to the masks in an earlier comment... I "forgot" what some people's mouths looked like during the compliance months of masking. Some clients started with us during this time and it was really shocking to see their mouths for the first time - to your point about the brain filling in the gaps, it was very obvious that my brain had filled in its own idea about what their mouths looked like.
Excellent examples of why eye witness accounts don't carry much weight in court.
I am humbled and honored that you would include me in your book. I will look forward to reading it when you finish!
I'm very familiar with Sasha's work....I appreciate her contribution on the covid shenanigans, and also her incredible art. She is quite talented.
I'm excited to watch the rest of your series...I see a lot of facial surgery in my neck of the woods, but it usually isn't welcome to "notice" it out loud 😂.
I'm sitting here trying to imagine making the radial artery as long as possible for a facial graft 😳 ...I don't know what an island graft is, but I'm guessing I'm about to find out. I'm assuming you took a graft for her face from her forearm?
Ok, I'm actually going to stop making up scenarios about things I know nothing about.
Full disclosure: I'm going to watch Part 3 now because I want to know.
You nailed it. I took it from the inside of her forearm. No hair. Good color match and the ulnar artery could keep the hand and fingers alive. I hope you got to see everything. I mislabeled 3 and 4 in my reply to your comment.
I will definitely watch it with sound when I get home! I missed your previous post, but I’ll look it up and check that one out as well.
I am fascinated by this...truly incredible...it gives me goosebumps.
The woo-woo in me would love to integrate meditation and vibrational sound therapy into the process to see if the healing could be further expedited <-- that was a random, no-audio, aside...
Really impressive work!
Thanks, Jack.

Extraordinary work, your patient must be utterly thrilled, as should you
She put me at the VIP table at her wedding and surrounded me with lots of pretty girls.
A great honour well deserved, hope all the boys didn’t get too jealous!

I'm looking forward to hearing what you think about the three parts you haven't see yet.
Part 1: the intro and memory test, the first painting in which I mixed colors.
Part 3; I prove Leonardo did NOT paint the Salvator Mundi (even though it sold for $400 million + a $50 million buyers [premium = $450 million here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRn_JOu7-tU&t=1813s
and Part 4 with the Island Graft (you have the link already.)

Interesting idea. It's worth a try. It can be very soothing. We rub stubbed toes to mask the pain. Makes sense.
The other video is here: https://drreidsheftall.substack.com/p/the-video-of-the-facial-reconstruction
I look forward to watching it!
Wow. Amazing!
Thank you.
