A couple of notes before the video:
I may have mentioned this before my other facial reconstruction post but it bears repeating. At my charity, Operation Kids, now 23 years in existence, 90% of the patients are small children 2,3,4,5..8 years old. I choose NOT to show them in posts and videos because it’s just too upsetting. (I used to find one of our secretaries crying in the bathroom every day until she couldn’t take it anymore and had to leave our clinic. Even my wonderful nurses have trouble with it.) The previous reconstruction I showed you and this one are on young ladies in the 20 years old range. It’s upsetting enough even to show you these. Thankfully these patients all have a happy ending after I fix their problems, even the little ones.
This one is as interesting as the patient I showed you a few weeks ago and I hope you’ll watch it. If you’re an artist, you will recognize something important when I say, “The mouth is the most important facial feature, by far.” The artists will tell you getting the mouth right (and the values, but that’s a different topic) is the key to getting a good likeness. The eyes, believe it or not, are the least important features.
Please ignore the pleads for Patreon support. I do everything through Substack now.
By the way, if you' don’t like the varied content I’m posting (surgeries and surgical stories, artwork, Walter Isaacson screw-ups, card counting (starting tomorrow in a 4 or 5 part series), math-oriented posts, incorrect medico-legal outcomes, etc., and would prefer to see only Covid-related posts, please let me know in the comments. Something is keeping me from getting paid subscribers- I’m at 30- while me fellow Substackers- many, not all- have over 1,000- some 5,000 plus paid subscribers- only posting Covid-related topics. Sasha is one exception who puts a painting of hers at the conclusion of every post (and they’re quite good- check her out at “Due Diligence and Art” ( sashalatypova.substack.com ). She’s also smart as can be.
I’ll be staying up as late as need be tonight to outline and start on my card counting series which will begin tomorrow so please do watch this video. Like the other one, it’s a real-life tragedy with a happy ending you will enjoy.
Thanks for watching and see you again tomorrow.
Really impressive work!
Beautiful work! Interesting comment about the mouth being so important. I worked with a few people for a year during covid and didn't see their nose or mouth during that time due to masking. We had an outdoor event to end the year and I hardly recognized one or two when seeing their whole face. I learned that our brains will "fill in" these missing features with what is our ideal (nose and mouth) for the person and I was surprised that their real face didn't meet up with the expectations my brain had filled in for them:) But it was wonderful to finally "meet them" full on!!
